The Influence of Material on Tablet

In the pharmaceutical, food and chemical industries, tablet press machine is the core equipment for converting powders and granules into tablet, and the character of raw materials are the key factors affecting the final tableting results.

Now well analyse how materials affect the tableting results.

1. Flowability

Flowability refers to the ability of materials to fill the die holes smoothly and evenly during the feeding process.

Poor flowability can lead to problems such as tablet separation and uneven tablet weight.

Common method to improve flowability:

①Granulation-- such as wet or dry granulation, agglomerates fine powder into particles of uniform size, reduces the proportion of fine powder, and improves flowability;

②Adding lubricants-- without affecting the formulation, an appropriate proportion of lubricant can be added;

2.Adhesion

Adhesion refers to the ability of materials to bind tightly under pressure.

Insufficient adhesion can cause tablets to crack or become friable tablet;

Conversely, excessive adhesion can also cause problems, such as sticking and excessive tablet hardness;

In actual production, adhesion can be balance through formulation adjustments(such as adding binders like MCC);

3. Lubricity

Lubricity refers to the resistance encountered when material slides through the mold. It reduces wear on the tableting machine punch and mold, ensuring a smooth tableting process. Insufficient lubricity can be lead to punch sticking and an uneven tablet surface.

Therefore, the type and amount of lubricant need to be precisely controlled (magnesium stearate is commonly used).

In summary, in actual production, adjustments need to be made based on the characteristics of the material itself to adapt to the tableting requirements of the tablet press machine, thereby producing high-quality tablets.
